The media has been all over Jason Giambi today. Once again he’s front and center in a steroids fiasco. The Daily News reported that Giambi failed his amphetamines test, which was given at some point over the past year.

The news is muddy at best. Perhaps the biggest indicator was that Giambi met lawyers today. Last Friday Giambi was quoted as saying:

“I was wrong for doing that stuff. We made a mistake,” Giambi said.

April 2007 was a magical month for A-Rod. He was a media darling. However, he started to fade late in the month and so far in May 2007 Alex Rodriguez has been off the radar. How bad is it? It’s not good.

In fact, it’s really bad when you consider that the Yankees have been playing a soft schedule of late. Their last 13 games have been against the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers—two clubs not going anywhere.

The Mariners have a team ERA of 4.91 and the Rangers have a team ERA of 5. One would suspect that A-Rod launched some shots out of the yard over the past two weeks. Ah, but you’d be mistaken.

Roger Clemens agreed to a deal with the New York Yankees today. The deal is worth $28 million for one-year—yes, $28 million.

While he could earn less—depending on playing time and performance—it will still cost the Yankees $25-$30 million after that nice luxury tax hits.

Is Roger Clemens worth $28 million? How about $20 million? Many get on A-Rod for his contract, but how does it look now? A-Rod makes $25 million—close to Clemens cash—and he plays every day. Clemens pitches every 5th day—if he feels like it.

The Yankees are quickly becoming one of the most over-hyped teams in baseball. Since 2000, what have the New York Yankees done—besides blow almost-guaranteed series victories?

The Yankees have been to the World Series twice since 2000 and they’ve lost both times. In 2001, they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks and in 2003 the Florida Marlins beat them.

It seems that 2004 was a pivotal season for the New York Yankees. The Boston Red Sox came back—somehow—from death’s door to beat the Yankees in the playoffs. The Red Sox went on to win the 2004 World Series.

Many had written off the AL playoffs to the New York Yankees. They are just too complete when compared to the other teams. Game one of their series against the Detroit Tigers went pretty much as expected—Yankees won easily. It looked to be going that way again today in game 2. However, the Tigers kept hacking away and runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings helped give them a 4-3 victory over the Yankees.

It was going well until the 6th inning. Randy Johnson was blowing away the White Sox hitters one after another. However, they woke up in the 6th and started catching up to Johnson’s pitches. Soon after giving up a couple of runs, Johnson was pulled. Ron Villone game into the game and got the Yankees to the 7th. Farnsworth came in and the wheels started to come apart.

Chien-Ming Wang has picked up his 12th win of the season. He’s 12-4 now. The Yankees had no trouble getting past the hapless Devil Rays—6-0 final. The Devil Rays were mystified by Wang as he continually put them down. Wang allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks on the night. He only had a lone strikeout. Tampa Bay just could not hit the ball.
