Yankees Mystique Over?

The Yankees are quickly becoming one of the most over-hyped teams in baseball. Since 2000, what have the New York Yankees done—besides blow almost-guaranteed series victories?

The Yankees have been to the World Series twice since 2000 and they’ve lost both times. In 2001, they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks and in 2003 the Florida Marlins beat them.

It seems that 2004 was a pivotal season for the New York Yankees. The Boston Red Sox came back—somehow—from death’s door to beat the Yankees in the playoffs. The Red Sox went on to win the 2004 World Series.

Since then, the Yankees have continued to buy players, get older, play without energy, and lose. Do they expect to win?

I think the recent six-game stint against the Red Sox shows exactly where this Yankee team is and where it’s going—to the bottom.

The Yankees have lost 5 of 6 against the Red Sox so far. They’ve been outscored 40-28. And more importantly, they’ve shown the ability to lose leads and to not come back in games—something the Yanks were always known for.

As of this writing, the Yankees have lost 8 of 9 games and the blame game has started. A-Rod was having a great April—albeit against mostly softer pitching—but he has closed the month with a string of sub par performances.

The fingers are pointing at Joe Torre now—he must go they say. Will it really matter? Who will manage better?

While some Yankee pitchers are injured right now, the Yanks have a very soft rotation—considering all the money being spent.

Is Mariano Rivera done being a big-game closer?

Rivera has pitched in three big games against Boston already this season. In just two innings of work, he’s thrown 52 pitches. He has four strikeouts, but he’s given up 7 hits and 6 runs.

Johnny Damon is a complete bust at this point. He’s got a .229 avg. and he’s on pace for 100 strikeouts, which would be more than he’s ever had in his career.

The Yankees are about to start a long series of games between the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. This is their opportunity to get back into the season. They are 9-14 and 6.5 back of Boston.
It might be me, but I think that many MLB teams in the American League fear the Yankees a little less these days. This is a team that’s 3-11 against the AL East and 1-2 against the AL West. Their only winning record is against the AL Central. They are 5-1.
