World Series Ratings

This year’s World Series is set up to be one of the lower watched in recent history. First, we have a team in the Detroit Tigers that will fail to get national attention. Yes, it’s a great story, but not great enough to hold a national audience. Let’s face it; the national audience would rather see the Yankees or Red Sox.

We will probably see a fair number of viewers tuning in when the Tigers get ready to win the series. That could be game four or five. Everyone loves an underdog that could make good, but there’s no reason for most to watch every single game.

On the other side of the field there’s the St. Louis Cardinals. Again, they are not going to pull in the national viewers. There’s also the fact that the last time they were in a World Series, they forgot to show up. Finally, I’m just going to come out and say it. The Cardinals don’t belong in this year’s World Series. Is an 83-78 team the best the National League can do?

The Cardinals aren’t exciting. Watching them play in the NLCS was like watching paint dry. They are a poor team that should be at home watching the World Series. Had they played a healthy Mets team, that’s exactly what would have happened. Now, fans must suffer because the World Series features a poor NL team. Here’s one for you. The Tigers are no longer underdogs.

For this year’s World Series to get anywhere near decent ratings, the Cardinals will need to win the first two games to go up 2-0. Then perhaps some will start tuning in to see if they will blow it. I’ll keep an eye out for actual World Series TV ratings. I don’t expect them to be very good. I think many will be tuning out to watch something like Deal or No Deal instead.
