Why the Cardinals Will Lose

Ok, maybe this should have been titled “why the Cardinals should lose.” First, the Cardinals are barely a .500 team. Honestly, they are lucky to be in a series tied 2-2. Today, that magic ends. The rains came down and gave Mr. Glavine another day of rest. On 3 days rest, the Cardinals had more than a legitimate shot to get to him. However, he’s now rested another day and should pitch well.

Here are a couple things to think about. Glavine is 1-0 this postseason already. Jeff Weaver—getting the start today for the Cardinals—is 0-0 with a 7.20 ERA. Just one start you say? In career starts against the Mets, Weaver is 2-1 with a 6.10 ERA. Glavine is 18-6 with a 3.61 ERA. How about this season? Weaver is 5-4 with a 5.18 ERA. Glavine is 15-7 with a 3.82 ERA.

Another thing to consider is that this series is going back to New York. If the Cardinals lose today, they will be down 3-2 with two games to play in New York. That’s a tough task for any team. Can the Cardinals win today? Sure, it’s theoretically possible. That’s why the games are actually played rather than decided by paper stats. But, this leads me to my final point.

The Cardinals should lose, because they offer nothing to World Series. Do we really want to watch another NL team behind a manager proven to falter in the big show take a siesta? The Detroit Tigers took out the might New York Yankees with precision and rolled right over the Oakland A’s. The St. Louis Cardinals aren’t even close to being in the same class as any of these AL teams. Sorry fans.

While I don’t think the NL is tough enough for the AL, at least the New York Mets have a shot. They can pitch and score lots of runs. The Tigers outclass the Cardinals in both fields. Sometimes the truth hurts, but there it is.
