Today, Pedro Martinez returned to Boston to pitch against the Red Sox. He was greeted well—the fans still respect him. However, the Red Sox were lying in wait for the former hurler. They got to him hard and early. It was anything but a typical Pedro Martinez outing. In fact, it was really a disgusting performance. Pedro’s performance would have been terrible for any regular pitcher in the MLB, but the fact that this is Pedro Martinez makes it even worse.
Pedro Martinez managed to last just three short innings. Over those three innings, the Red Sox tattooed him. He walked two hitters and gave up seven hits. Before fans had even settled into their seats, the Red Sox were up 8-0 and Martinez was exiting the game. Two of those runs were unearned. Martinez surrendered six of those 8 runs. The second inning was the only of his three that he did not allow a run.
The fans gave Pedro a standing ovation when he took the mound and you can bet they were mighty pleased when he left. Pedro also surrendered a home run to the number 9 hitter, Alex Gonzalez—shortstop for the Red Sox. In the end, The Red Sox destroyed the Mets. Josh Beckett was on his game. He went 7.2 solid innings allowing just 2 earned runs over 5 hits and one walk. The Red Sox won 10-2 and continue their hot pace and onslaught on the American League East lead.
