The New York Mets picked up starting pitcher Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins and everyone and their mother decided to declare them National League champs. If you we’re thinking of betting them to win the NL, your time has passed.
Before the Santana trade, the Mets were 4-1 to win the National League Pennant. Even though I think that was a bit high, it was still a decent price for the Mets. However, after the Santana trade (as of now), the Mets are a gross 5-2 (2.5-1). No thanks.
One man managed to cut the payout almost in half. That’s a bit steep. He also did the same with the MLB World Series futures. Before the trade, the Mets were sitting at 8-1. Santana has trimmed those odds to 5-1—a 37.5% reduction.
Will a 15-13 (2007 season) pitcher magically propel a the oldest team in MLB that missed the playoffs last year to the World Series? I’m betting on the answer being no.
