The MLB Playoffs

Let me just say right now that I was cheering for the Tigers. I’m glad they won and I’m glad the Yankees lost. Once again A-Rod proved that he’s not the greatest player in the game and that he’s worthless when it counts. The MLB playoffs initially looked to be boring and a waste of time this season. Yes, I love baseball as much as the next person, but just about everyone figured the Yankees would represent the AL and sweep whoever was there for the NL.

I was also dreading a possible subway series. Who cares? I don’t live in New York and the thought of watching two teams from the same city that could fund a league all by themselves isn’t exciting.

The American League playoffs are now interesting—to some degree. We have two almost blue-collar type teams. We don’t have over hyped players, big pricey managers or a been there done that type of series. What we have are two similar teams. They have timely hitting and good pitching. We have two teams that haven’t been to the ALCS in quite some time. Heck, the Tigers haven’t been to the playoffs in ages period.

On Tuesday the Detroit Tigers open up the 2006 ALCS at the Oakland A’s. Will it be exciting? It definitely could be. I think the Tigers have the momentum, because they just knocked off the big beast from the East. The A’s are rested thanks to the Twins not showing up for the playoffs.

How about the National League? Does it even matter? I’m not too impressed with the National League. What’s there to like? You have a team in the St. Louis Cardinals that’s barely over .500 and almost completed one of the biggest disasters in sports history. Do you honestly think they will bring a challenge to the World Series table?

That leaves the Mets. Sure, if you are a Yankees fan, you can go dust off that Mets cap and act like you’ve been there from the beginning. Pedro and Hernandez are out for the Mets. They looked a bit sleepy towards the second half of the season. Are they a World Series caliber team? Now that the Yankees are gone, I think so. I expect the American League will win again, but the Mets could at least make it a series.
