The Boston Red Sox sneaked past the Chicago White Sox today to keep alive in the playoff hunt. The lone score came in the 4th inning. The White Sox could only muster 4 hits all afternoon. The Red Sox only got 3 hits, but they got a run across and that proved to be the difference. The Red Sox beat the White Sox 1-0.
Javier Vazquez started for the White Sox. He went 8 solid innings. He gave up 3 hits, 3 walks and the winning run. He struck out 11 Red Sox batters. Despite the great outing by Vazquez, he gets the loss. He’s 11-9 on the season.
Kason Gabbard, a leftie, started the game for the Red Sox. He gave them 7 shutout innings. Over those 7 innings, Gabbard allowed 3 hits and two walks. He struck out 6. Mike Timlin came on in relief and pitched two great innings. He only allowed one base runner and earned his 4th save. Kason Gabbard got the win—his first. He’s now 1-3 on the season.
David Ortiz was back in the lineup. He was 0-3 with a walk. Manny Ramirez is also back in the Red Sox lineup. He was 0 for 3. Nixon, Crisp and Gonzalez all had one hit apiece. For the White Sox, the hits came from Ozuna, Iguchi and Sweeney—the 1,2 and 9 hitters. Hitters 3 through 8 were silent today. The Red Sox continue their chase of the White Sox and Twins for the Wild Card and the Yankees for the AL East. The White Sox are in a duel with Minnesota for the Wild Card.
