As expected, the Philadelphia Phillies won. J. Seo only pitched 4 innings for the Dodgers. He gave up three run and five hits. O. Perez pitched in relief for an inning and gave up nothing. He was followed by Broxton who also gave up nothing. At this point in the game the Dodgers had rallied and taken the lead 5-3. However, in the 7th inning, the wheels came off. D. Baez entered the game and got rocked. Before getting even 1 out, Baez gave up 2 walks, 3 hits and five earned runs.
It was an absolute disaster for the Dodgers. Baez was pulled in the 7th after giving up 5 runs and not recording a single out. Three more Dodger pitchers entered the game the close it down—including Eric Gagne—but it was too late, the damage was done. The Dodgers scored a meaningless run in the 8th inning and lost 8-6. The total sailed over, which was a tad surprising. I thought the under had a real shot. However, the play here was the Phillies and smart sports bettors had them solidly.
Madson, for the Phillies, pitched 5 innings in this one and gave up 5 runs. He did not have the expected performance. He gave up 2 more runs than expected and pitched 1 less inning. Still, the outcome was predicted. Tonight’s game was a good example of why baseball bettors that simply bet starting pitchers come out on the bottom in the long run. Tonight’s starters only pitched for 50% of the game. They accounted for 57% of the final score.
