The game between the A’s and Tigers in Detroit looked like it would be either a blowout or a slugfest early. In the bottom of the first inning, the Detroit Tigers put up 5 runs on the A’s. However, in the top of the second, the A’s came right back with 5 of their own. It was evident early that pitching was not going to come with the price of admission. The game stayed 5-5 until the fifth inning when the A’s scored a run and took the lead. They added two more runs in the sixth to go up 8-5 and take a comfortable lead. In the 8th, they added one more.
It was more than enough. Detroit was finished after their first inning fireworks. The game ended 9-5 and Oakland got back on track. Tigers pitcher Miner lasted just 2.1 innings. He gave up 5 runs over 7 hits. Even though Blanton for the A’s gave up 5 runs, he managed to stick around for 5 innings. He gave up those 5 runs over 9 hits. He is now 10-8 on the year.
When Miner went out Wilfredo Ledezma was called in to pick up the slack. While he ate up innings, he also gave up runs. He pitched 4.2 innings and gave up 3 runs over 3 hits and 4 walks. He’s 1-1 on the season in relief. Ellis for was the only A’s hitter to not get a hit and Wilson was the only Tigers hitter to accomplish the same feat. The Tigers have a 6 game lead in their division and show no signs of giving in. The A’s are clinging to a 1 game lead over the Rangers. The Angels are also a threat at 2.5 games back. Even the Mariners at 5 games back could surprise.
