The media has been all over Jason Giambi today. Once again he’s front and center in a steroids fiasco. The Daily News reported that Giambi failed his amphetamines test, which was given at some point over the past year.
The news is muddy at best. Perhaps the biggest indicator was that Giambi met lawyers today. Last Friday Giambi was quoted as saying:
“I was wrong for doing that stuff. We made a mistake,” Giambi said.
Was he admitting to using steroids and implicating others? That’s what many are thinking.
The rumor mill is churning and apparently the Yankees are looking, again, for a way out of their contract with Giambi.
Giambi is struggling this season. He’s hitting .268 with 6 homeruns. Here’s the kicker. He has one home run over his past 14 games. In that span, his average has dropped 51 points—from .319 to .268. His OBP and SLG percentage has dropped also. He’s driven in one—yes one—RBI in that span and that was the one homerun he hit.
If Giambi were taking steroids—and I’m not saying he is or has—he’d be a case for how steroids don’t help make you a good hitter, because he’s stinking it up out there.
