Tonight’s game against the Florida Marlins was almost in hand for the New York Mets—almost. The game was a back and forth affair. The Mets scored 3 in the third to take a 4-1 lead, but the Marlins scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th to tie things up. In the top of the 7th, the Mets got the go ahead run (5-4).
It looked like smooth sailing to the finish line. Billy Wagner come on to close it out. However, with one out and a man on second, pinch-hitter Josh Willingham parked one over the fences for a walk off game winning home run. The Mets blew the game and the Marlins won 6-5.
Matt Herges pitched one inning for the Marlins and got the win. Olsen started the game and went 6 innings. He gave up 4 runs over 6 hits and 4 walks. He did strikeout 10 Mets hitters. As mentioned, Billy Wagner couldn’t get the job done for the Mets. He gets the loss (3-2).
The Marlins are still 6 games under .500, but they are only 5 games out of the wildcard. The Reds and Diamondbacks are leading (D’Backs 1 game back). These two teams are anything but stable, so this race is far from over. Could the Marlins keep putting together wins and get to the playoffs?
