Mariners at Padres Game Two

Last night game one went ten innings. The Padres scored in the bottom of the tenth to win 2-1. As a result, the Padres are one full game up on the Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The Mariners are now five games back. Last night Linebrink got the win and Mateo got the loss. The Mariners have had two low scoring games in a row now. The trend points to them scoring some runs tonight and Chan Ho Park may just be the pitcher to serve up the tasty treats. The under/over is 7.5. I had to do a double take on this figure. Are they serious? Well, let’s see how this number holds up.

The Padres have Chan Ho Park on the mound. Park has a 3.18 home ERA. While he started out slow in April, he has been getting better each month since. In April, his ERA was 5.34. It improved to 4.05 in May. It is currently a massive improvement to 2.84 this month. Park is giving up a walk just about every game. Expect him to issue about two walks tonight. In his last three outings, he has allowed three walks each. He has only allowed the home run ball in 5 of his 15 starts.

In May, Park faced these Mariners and they absolutely tattooed him. Park managed to give the team 5.1 costly innings though. In that game, he allowed 12 total baserunners—10 hits and two walks. The Mariners hit two home runs off of him and scored 10 runs. He only managed two strikeouts. It was not a performance to remember. Still, expecting six innings out of him tonight is about right. He will most likely allow 7-8 baserunners. As we have seen by his earlier performance against these Mariners, this could mean 4-6 runs.

The Mariners have veteran Jamie Moyer on the mound. The crafty veteran is not having a great road year. His road ERA is 5.58. So far, June has been his best month of the season. He has a 1.93 ERA this month. Of course, three of those four games have been in the friendly confines of Safeco Field. His last outing was against the Giants. He went 8 strong innings and allowed 6 hits and one run, which was a homer. He did not allow a walk and struck out four.

His last road outing was against the AL West leading Oakland A’s. He went 6 innings in that game. He allowed 10 baserunners—8 hits and two walks. He only surrendered two runs. Again, he struck out four. He has not faced the Padres since 2003. In that performance, he pitched 5 innings. He allowed 4 hits and three walks. He struck out three and allowed three runs. A couple of Mariners errors forced him to work harder. Two of those errors led to unearned runs.
