The Cleveland Indians had the Boston Red Sox right where they wanted them—up by 3 going into the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, the Red Sox in Boston proved to be too much and the Indians blew the game. The Red Sox scored 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 9-8 and keep their lead in the AL East. This big hit—a three-run homer—came courtesy of David Ortiz. It was another game winning hit for him.
His hit saved the Red Sox and David Wells. Wells had a disgusting outing today. He pitched just 4.2 innings and gave up 8 runs over 8 hits and 2 walks. The Indians had his number and just kept on scoring. Snyder came on in relief and did very well. He pitched 4.1 scoreless innings—allowing a lone hit. He got the win.
Fausto Carmona got the loss for Cleveland. He came on in the ninth and could only muster a single out. He gave up a single to Cora, walked Youkilis and gave up the crushing blow to Ortiz.
