Bonds, Steroids – Do you care?

Unless you have the brain the size of a pea or are racially biased, it’s fairly obvious that Barry Bonds has taken some sort of enhancement.

That’s really not the issue in my opinion. The question is: do you care?

In recent days, Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox pitcher) has basically said that Bonds took steroids and that he (Bonds) doesn’t deserve a break. Today, Schilling apologized on his blog about those statements.

Let me say that I don’t care. And here’s why.

First, no matter how juiced up someone is, you still need to be a solid hitter to get good wood on the baseball.

Second, many of the homeruns he hits are way out of the park. Are you going to tell me that taking steroids adds 100 feet to a homerun?

Third, the MLB has done nothing about it. It’s up to the game, not me, to regulate itself. If the MLB does nothing about this issue, it means that either Bonds didn’t take steroids or that the MLB doesn’t care as long as the person taking steroids—like Bonds—is a star.

And finally, I don’t consider the homerun record to be the most prestigious record in baseball—far from it. Why would it be? All the homerun record says is that you hit homeruns—join the crowd—and that you’ve played for a really long time.

Also, the lack of pitching—thanks to expansion mainly—has diluted the homerun anyway.

For me, I think breaking the consecutive hitting streak record or hitting over .400 in a season is far better. I’m not interested in “playing time” based stats.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great record and it’s an accomplishment, but it’s far from the holy grail of achievements.

Bonds has played in roughly 21 seasons—dump 2005. He has averaged 35 homeruns per season. As a point of reference, A-Rod is averaging almost 42 homeruns per full season of play.

It’s possible that A-Rod, only 31, will hit 900+ homeruns before he’s done.

So, go ahead and break the record, throw out Bonds’ homeruns or whatever, it won’t matter. The eventual homerun king is already playing the game.

His name is Alex Rodriguez. He’s 31 and already has 479 homeruns. He should be at 500 by season’s end. And in approximately 8 years, we’ll be celebrating his breaking of the record.
