April 2007 was a magical month for A-Rod. He was a media darling. However, he started to fade late in the month and so far in May 2007 Alex Rodriguez has been off the radar. How bad is it? It’s not good.

In fact, it’s really bad when you consider that the Yankees have been playing a soft schedule of late. Their last 13 games have been against the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers—two clubs not going anywhere.

The Mariners have a team ERA of 4.91 and the Rangers have a team ERA of 5. One would suspect that A-Rod launched some shots out of the yard over the past two weeks. Ah, but you’d be mistaken.

Over the past 18 games, A-Rod has only hit one homerun. That’s right. He started like a bat out of hell with 14 big shots. Since then, he’s gone yard once.

So, let’s take a look at the last 13 games against these two weaker—especially pitching-wise—AL teams.

A-Rod went 13 for 47, which is a .276 average. He’s lost 26 points off of his batting average in just two weeks.

His slugging percent has plummeted 168 points over the past 13 games—ouch. His May slugging percent is .383, which is about 500 points lower than April’s slugging percent—.882.

He’s just not producing right now.

If there’s one bright spot for A-Rod, it’s that his OBP hasn’t significantly decreased in the past two weeks. However, it is trending down.

On a side note, A-Rod now has 31 strikeouts. He’s on pace for 120-140 this season. That’s about par for the course, so there’s one area that he’s being consistent in.

Can May be salvaged? We’ll have to watch. My guess is that he’ll come around somewhat, but April just might end up being his best month of the season.
